Disco Elysium Founder Claims Essential Developers Left ‘involuntarily’

Original Source: Founding member of Disco Elysium studio claims core devs ‘involuntarily’ left the company

Martin Luiga, a founding member of Studio ZA/UM and editor on Disco Elysium, PC Gamer’s 2019 Game of the Year, announced the “dissolution of the ZA/UM Cultural Association” via a Medium article (first spotted by independent journalist Nibel on Twitter).

Luiga distinguishes the ZA/UM “cultural association” from the firm and claims Disco Elysium head designer Robert Kurvitz, writer Helen Hindpere, and art director Aleksander Rostov resigned voluntarily at the end of 2021.

Luiga says ZA/UM no longer embodies the ideals it was established on. Luiga says ZA/UM was a success and that “most mistakes were dependent, determined by sociocultural context”

In a Medium statement, Luiga blames ZA/financiers UM’s for its character shift and significant team member departures. Luiga says he doesn’t sure if ZA/UM could have funded itself without investors. “It was pretty,” Luiga says. “Many thanks to everybody who rooted for us.”

Luiga’s post is signed “Tallinn Inpatient Treatment Centre of Psychiatry Clinic, Ward IX.” Tallinn, Estonia is where ZA/UM began. I don’t know if Luiga’s location signature is real or a nasty joke. Martin Luiga is in my prayers.

Luiga, Kurvitz, Hindpere, and Rostov were all members of the punk collective that became Studio ZA/UM. Kurvitz and Hindpere drove the game’s storyline, and Rostov’s impressionistic graphic style is one of its defining aspects.

The sequel’s job advertisements mention “a love of sci-fi and space,” but Luiga doesn’t appear bothered. In another tweet, he says, “I think things with the sequel are nice enough, you might even get it the way it was planned, it might take a shit ton of time but RPG fans are sorta accustomed to waiting, ain’t they”

We asked Studio ZA/UM for comment and will update if we hear back.

Red Dead Online’s Top Fan Could Waste 6,000 Hours on Stadia

Original Source: Red Dead Online’s biggest superfan may lose 6,000 hours of progress on Stadia

Some developers working on Stadia projects have been laid off. Many gamers lose progress and a platform. Colour, a YouTuber and TikTok creator, has almost 6,000 hours on the Stadia version of Red Dead Redemption Online 2. All that cowboy pleasure is fading like tears in rain.

6,000 hours is a huge amount of time. This isn’t your typical “played too much,” it’s 250 days. Five years ago, I was an intermediate to advanced barbell and kettlebell lifter. Back-of-the-napkin math says I’ve spent 1,500-2,000 hours on one hobby.

Since RDR Online 2’s Stadia release in November 2018, Colour has played 6,000 hours, or almost four hours a day. Weekends add another six hours. Granted, Colour performs a lot of content development for RDR Online 2, being the “RDR Online 2 on Stadia person,” but I still find this annoying! Sylvia Pepe (opens in new tab).

Colour’s time investment in Red Dead Online is in risk of becoming one of those daily-burned Libraries of Alexandria. Not necessarily.

Single-player RDR2 on Stadia can be transferred to PC, but not multiplayer. IO Interactive and Bungie are working on ways to transfer player data to another platform.

Colour hopes a “one-time character transfer” will save their progress. Rockstar hasn’t responded; we’ll update if they do.

Colour’s dedication to Read Dead Redemption Online 2 on Stadia is admirable. I hope Rockstar can aid Colour before fate destroys their progress.

On the other hand, a founding member of Studio ZA/UM and editor on Disco Elysium (2019 Game of the Year and #1 on PC Gamer’s Top 100 poll) named Martin Luiga as the “dissolution of the ZA/UM Cultural Association” in a Medium post (first noticed by independent journalist Nibel on Twitter). Luiga distinguishes the ZA/UM “cultural association” from the firm and claims Disco Elysium head designer Robert Kurvitz, writer Helen Hindpere, and art director Aleksander Rostov left the company in 2021.

Finally, some developers working on Google’s Stadia cloud gaming platform have been fired. Lots of gamers are losing save progress because of this.
