In today’s video gaming news, read about why Marvel’s Midnight Suns gets a new release date for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, not PS4 and Xbox One. Meanwhile, one of the most distinctive features of VR headsets is the need to be connected to a PC, console, or smartphone. Does Oculus Quest 2 need it? Also, the Scooby Gang’s smartest member Velma won’t call the police on his enemies anymore in Multiversus. Lastly, at Ubisoft Forward 2022, the company announced three upcoming Assassin’s Creed titles.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns Explain Why Their Console Ports Will Lag Behind PS5, Xbox Series X
Original Source: Marvel’s Midnight Suns Devs Reveal Why PS4, Xbox One Versions Release Later than PS5, Xbox Series X
Marvel’s Midnight Suns was one of the few games confirmed for the D23 Expo’s Disney and Marvel Games Showcase ahead of time. A new teaser shows combat, social components, and more. The significant news is that Marvel’s Midnight Suns now has a December 2, 2022 publication date. Many fans were sad they wouldn’t get the social-tactical RPG in 2022, but now they may rejoice.
In the latest teaser, it wasn’t obvious that this only applies to the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X versions. According to a press release, Marvel’s Midnight Suns will launch on PS4 and Xbox One later than on current-gen. It’s not surprising, given game creation gets more complicated with multiple platforms, but it is unusual. At D23, Game Rant asked Creative Director Jake Solomon and Franchise Producer Garth DeAngelis about the choice.
It’s no surprise, but it’s about platform parity. Firaxis has always emphasized sophisticated systems with a focus on tactics and strategy, resulting in interfaces that function better on PCs and with mouse and keyboard than consoles and controllers. Marvel’s Midnight Suns is as deep as XCOM, if not more so, therefore quality on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X is vital. Marvel’s Midnight Suns was delayed, DeAngelis said.
We hadn’t thought of some of the game’s angles in previous strategy games, so we gave the team more time to make it amazing. And we want parity across platforms and SKUs. It’s crucial that current-gen consoles play as well as PCs.
Logic applies to everyone picking up the game, regardless of platform. PS4, Switch, and Xbox One versions need more time than December. How much longer isn’t known, as the decision is likely still up in the air, but Firaxis won’t release Marvel’s Midnight Suns before it’s ready. “We need additional time to get those up to par,” DeAngelis said.
“2K and Marvel seem to realize this. We don’t want divergent SKUs, so allowing teams extra time to achieve parity is a smart approach.”
Too often, one game version (typically PC) plays better than others. For a game like Marvel’s Midnight Suns that emphasizes strategy, this is likely. Firaxis wants to make sure the game runs well everywhere, so fans must wait for PS4, Switch, and Xbox One editions.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns is out Dec. 2 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. PS4, Switch, and Xbox One releases are unannounced.
Oculus Quest 2 PC Needed? Explained
Original Source: Do you need a PC for Oculus Quest 2? Explained
If you’re new to VR headsets, it can be hard to know where to start. There are many models, each with its unique characteristics and prices.
And they must be connected to a PC, console, or smartphone. It depends on the manufacturer and purpose of each headset, which determines app shops. It can allow more or less play freedom.
Can I use Oculus Quest 2 sans PC?
Both the Oculus Go and Oculus Quest line (including Meta Quest 2) are standalone headsets. No PC needed for Oculus Quest 2.
You can still link them to a PC. Depending on the game, you can connect Oculus Quest 2 to a PC, Mac, or Linux by Wi-Fi or USB connection. Graphics quality is usually better when using Quest 2 with a PC than as a standalone headset.
To play the games on your headset, you must buy them from the Oculus Store using the headset or a mobile app that lets you choose your platform. Everything you buy on Steam or other platforms is only available when the headset is plugged in or connected via Wi-Fi. On the Oculus Store, you may buy games and programs for PC, so be careful and pay attention to the platform you’re buying for.
Oculus Quest
In May 2019, Reality Labs, a VR and AR-focused division of Meta Platforms, released Oculus Quest. Reality Labs was formed in 2012 and acquired by Facebook in 2014 after its Oculus Rift prototype gained prominence. In the past, they’ve teamed with Samsung, Xiaomi, and Lenovo.
What are Oculus’ models?
Five VR headsets are branded Oculus:
Oculus Rift CV1 (2016 release)
Oculus Rift S, 2019
Oculus Go, 2018
Oculus Quest, 2019
Oculus Quest 2 (now Meta Quest 2), 2020
Samsung Gear VR (or Oculus Gear VR) is an attachment for Samsung Galaxy smartphones. Released in 2015, Samsung stopped supporting it in 2020 on the Galaxy Store and Play Store. As a result of a collaboration between the two firms, the Gear VR was only compatible with Samsung Galaxy smartphones.
In August 2022, the Oculus Go and the first Oculus Quest will be decommissioned. Meta Quest 2, formerly Oculus Quest 2, is the only one still available for purchase.
Is Oculus Quest 2 PC-less?
As a standalone VR headset, Oculus Quest 2 runs its own Android-based OS. Compared to its predecessor, it has updated hardware.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 SoC is developed for VR and AR devices. Storage options are 128GB or 256GB. Quest 2 came in 64GB and 256GB models, although the 64GB was upgraded in 2021. All have 6GB LPDDR4X RAM and 2-3 hours of battery life.
The headset has a 72-90hz LCD 18323800 display (a single panel, 18321920 per eye). Some titles, including Superhot VR, support 120 Hz refresh rate.
Oculus headsets without a PC?
They’re both discontinued. The Oculus Rift range, including the original CV1 and the S, only works with Windows, Mac, or Linux.
Meta no longer manufactures or sells Oculus Rift CV1 or Rift S, but it aims to support both headsets. Game and app libraries are the same.
Multiversus Removes Velma’s Police Maneuver
Original Source: MultiVersus removes the police from Velma’s special move
The MultiVersus patch that went online yesterday, version 1.02, includes a number of big and tiny changes to the game, and one is particularly noteworthy since it’s so odd: Velma will no longer call the police after solving a mystery.
Velma’s MultiVersus passive lets her collect “evidence” as she attacks during a fight. When she had enough, she can call the police to “arrest” the other player. It’s her ultimate ability, a splashy kill-guarantee if the opponent team does nothing. It is:
Since yesterday, that’s changed. According to the 1.02 patch notes, “Instead of phoning the police, Velma now calls the Mystery Inc. gang and the Mystery Machine to take the bad men away.”
No rationale was given for the alteration, but the picture of Velma calling the cops on her opponents—under false pretenses, no less, because she tells them it’s Old Man Jenkins—is at the very least unpleasant at a time when police abuses and crimes are coming under growing public attention. This is especially true when she faces Black males like Lebron James, as in real life (opens in new tab).
Apart from an altered hitbox, Velma’s move is functionally identical after the patch, but instead of the police, the Mystery Machine takes the opponent away. This has created a debate regarding whether extrajudicial kidnappings are better than police brutality. AntWithNoPants addressed the problem in a Reddit post that I think settles the question.
“Scooby Gang stops rich people from screwing up the poor for fun,” they wrote. “I’d deal with them over cops.”
Most social media comment focused on how the move will affect gameplay, not the sociopolitical aspect. Game director Tony Huynh tweeted that replacing the police car with the Mystery Machine is both a buff and a nerf. The larger Mystery Machine is more likely to hit foes, but also more likely to be hit.
The update focused on linking MultiVersus’ hitboxes and hurtboxes to character animations. Player First Games wrote in the patch notes, “This is our first step toward really accurate hitbox/hurtbox detection and offers us a basis to permanently fix issues going ahead.”
Still, some players wanted MultiVersus without police.
PC Gamer asked Warner about the removal of MultiVersus’ police car but did not hear back.
Ubisoft Forward Revealed Three New Assassin Creed Games
Original Source: Three brand new Assassin Creed games announced at Ubisoft Forward
A new flagship open world RPG set in Japan, the witchy Codename Hexe, and a mobile game spin-off were unveiled at Ubisoft Forward 2022 on Saturday. Ubisoft also revealed Assassin’s Creed Mirage, a return to the stealth-focused early games. Valhalla will also be getting a final bit of DLC near the end of 2022 that will tie off its primary plot.
Codename Red finally brings Assassin’s Creed to feudal Japan (opens in new tab). “Shinobi” was mentioned, but that’s it. Like Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, it’ll be an open-world RPG. The next flagship game won’t come out until 2024.
Even less was known about Codename Hexe. Given its witchy pagan feelings, I’ll wager it’s set in 16th-century Europe, when witchcraft charges were rampant. Or maybe it’ll be about the Salem witch trials. Ubisoft says Codename Hexe will be something new for Assassin’s Creed, but details are unknown. It won’t be out until 2024.
Codename Jade is set in 215 BC China. You may customize your own assassin in this open-world mobile RPG. It’ll also have parkour and stealth, but on a phone. The trailer was captured utilizing the in-game engine, which looked great. Codename Jade was not released.
Ubisoft unveiled Valhalla’s Last Chapter DLC. As you wrap up Valhalla’s lackluster ending, you may chat with Sigurd, cosplay as Basim, and meet more historical friends and foes.
Summary of Today’s Computer Gaming News
Overall , the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Marvel’s Midnight Suns will launch after the current-gen versions, according to a recent press statement. This is rare, but not unexpected given the increasing difficulty of making a game for several platforms.
Meanwhile, Oculus Go and Quest series (including Meta Quest 2) are standalone VR headsets. Oculus Quest 2 doesn’t need a PC. You can still link them to a computer. Depending on the game, you can connect the Oculus Quest 2 through Wi-Fi or USB.
On the other hand, the police are taken out of Velma’s special move by MultiVersus. Instead, when Velma solves a case, she summons the Mystery Inc. crew and the Mystery Machine to apprehend the bad guys.
Finally, three new Assassin’s Creed games were unveiled at Forward 2022. New Japanese open world RPG, Codename Hexe, and a mobile spin-off. Ubisoft also revealed the newly leaked Assassin’s Creed Mirage, a return to stealth-focused early Assassin’s Creed.
