F.TV viewers use more and more Media libraries as a supplement to the regular television program. Streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video and Netflix are also enjoying increasing popularity. It would be nice if the television brought this to its screen with on-board tools. Grundig uses Amazon’s Fire OS operating system for this. The first Fire TV televisions from Grundig were very inexpensive, but saved on the picture quality. Shortly afterwards there were great models with OLED screens, which then cost four digits. The gap in between is now filled by the new Grundig Vision 8 GUB8040 Fire TV Edition the best smart TV in the affordable range?

Test conclusion: you need to know that
Anyone who knows Amazon Fire TV will get along straight away with the Grundig Vision 8 55GUB8040 Fire TV Edition. Newcomers have to dig into the colorful Amazon world first, but the TV functions are well integrated. And when in doubt, Alexa helps. On the other hand, the Grundig can also be used outside the Amazon world, for example only for TV reception and media libraries. The picture quality is very decent for the price range, and you can live with the sound. The Grundig just doesn’t have too many connections.

Thanks to Fire OS with apps for Netflix, Disney and more
Smart TVs pose major challenges for their manufacturers. Because they have to ensure that the latest apps for all relevant streaming providers are always available on their devices. For an international giant like Samsung, that’s not a big problem. Other manufacturers such as Philips, Sony and TCL rely on the Android TV operating system to reduce their own programming effort. With Fire OS as the operating system, Grundig offers a clever alternative: As with the Fire TV Stick, not only is the app available for Amazon Prime Video, but also for Netflix, Disney +, for media libraries and much more. According to reports, Apple TV and Sky Ticket will also follow. Smaller TV manufacturers with their own operating systems cannot offer this selection.
Alexa knows where the crime scene is
There is also a Fire-OS Alexa in the Grundig televisions. The microphone for voice control is built into the remote control and only hears at the push of a button. According to Grundig, there are no microphones in the television itself. The slim remote control lies very comfortably in the hand and the upper half is reminiscent of the Fire TV remote controls. In the lower half there is a numeric keypad and the four colored function keys, for example for media library control, great. The four direct buttons for Amazon, Netflix, DAZN and TVnow would not have been necessary, users can find their desired program similarly quickly via the Fire TV on-screen menu. If you want to be bothered by Amazon as little as possible, you can switch off personalized advertising in the menu (Settings, then Privacy Settings), and switch “Do not interrupt” on and “App notifications” off in the notifications. Under “Recommended content” you can also switch off the fact that trailers start running automatically. For the television, the menu got some additional entries, for example for the screen settings. The streaming sticks now also have the menu item Live TV. However, they can only receive television programs via the Internet, with the Grundig Vision 8 GUB8040 this also works in the classic way via cable, satellite and antenna. Users can zap through TV programs as usual or call them up using the numeric keypad. This also works via voice command, Alexa knows “Das Erste” as well as “DMAX”. She can also find films and series from Amazon and Netflix as well as some media libraries. Even if Alexa is sometimes on the hose, this voice control is still clearly one of the best in televisions.
Grundig saves on connections
On this side of the colorful Fire TV world with Alexa, Grundig is rather stingy when it comes to equipment: There are three for players such as game consoles or DVD recorders HDMI inputs. The Grundig does not have an analog video input for connecting older devices. Photos and videos can be played via two USB ports. The TV does not have a USB recording function. Of course, it is even more annoying that there is no headphone output. At least a Bluetooth headset can be paired (in the menu under Settings Remote controls and Bluetooth devices Other Bluetooth devices). For a television set for well under 700 euros with a 55 inch screen size (140 centimeters), the overall equipment is okay.

The same applies to picture and sound quality. The screen in the Grundig Vision 8 GUB8040 is sufficiently bright at 325 candelas per square meter, but not particularly high-contrast, very dark parts of the image drown easily. The high image definition (UHD or 4K, 3840×2160 pixels) decreased in motion, something that only more expensive 100-Hertz televisions can do better. The Grundig also did well in the test with natural colors. If HDR films (from Amazon or Netflix, for example) were on the program, the colors increased noticeably, and the picture looked a tad livelier. The laboratory confirmed that the Grundig can display more colors than its cheaper LCD siblings, albeit not as many as the much more expensive OLED models (DCI P3 color space coverage 81 percent, simple LCD models around 72 percent, OLED TVs at 98 percent). In addition, the colors change comparatively little when viewers look sideways at the screen, thanks to the IPS technology. The sound is completely okay, especially for speech contributions. They sound a bit nasal, but they are easy to understand. If you want more, you can connect a soundbar.
