Dhe sounds promising: a TV in the popular 55-inch format with a screen size of 140 centimeters, sharp UHD resolution, the latest Android operating system and Google Assistant, with all the important connections and a stylish metal frame – and all this at a very attractive price. The new TCL C715 offers even more: it is equipped with a so-called QLED screen. The Q stands for “Quantum Dots”, for microscopic particles that give the screen stronger colors. Even when the image brightness is very high, the colors remain strong and do not fade.

QLED technology ensures better image quality
So far, there are mainly Samsung QLED TVs, but at least one class more expensive than the TCL. Is it just as good? Not quite. In the test, the color splendor typical of QLED technology was pleasing: it reproduced a remarkable 92 percent of the colors found in cinema films (color space DCI P3). Other cheap LCD TVs only get a little over 70 percent, the image impression is correspondingly paler. The color mix was also right, the TCL C715 reproduced all colors very correctly. The only drawback: he did not show really deep black, which made the pictures look a bit flat in a dark environment. In addition, a rather strong jerky picture was annoying. However, the picture was okay for the price range, especially since such colors are otherwise only available on significantly more expensive televisions.

Operation is not that easy
Buyers of the TCL C715 have to put a little effort into the handling: the brief instructions offer little help, translation errors cause question marks in the setting menus. As Operating system, the manufacturer uses the current version 9 of Android TV. This provides a large selection of streaming apps including Disney +, as well as voice control for hands-free operation. The microphones built into the TV can be switched off with a mechanical switch on the back of the TV. The work pace is high, the TV responds quickly to inputs with the handy remote control. Only when he wakes up from standby can he take a lot of time with around 35 seconds. TCL promises immersive surround sound through Dolby Atmos. Little of this was heard in the test, but the two speakers on the bottom of the TV provided a balanced and acceptable sound. Important when connecting a soundbar: The sound output via HDMI (ARC) is switched off at the factory. Only when the HDMI control is switched on (in the “Inputs” section of the settings menu) does one of the three HDMI connections output the sound. In addition, the TCL has a headphone output, and headphones or speakers can be connected via Bluetooth. Photos and videos can be played via two USB inputs. However, the C715 does not support the DivX format and AVCHD videos (e.g. from camcorders).
