AVM FritzBox 6850 5G in the test: middle class at a luxury price

[ad_1]

The FritzBox 6850 5G is a premiere for AVM: It is the first router from the Berlin manufacturer with the eponymous cellular standard. In terms of publication, however, it is a real classic – because while AVM’s devices are now following in rapid succession, it was originally a good few years before an announced model saw the light of day. The company presented the 6850 5G at the International Radio Exhibition (IFA) in 2019; However, due to delays in the 5G expansion and the associated technical adjustments, the manufacturer postponed the market launch. Now the router is finally available – in view of the high price of 569 euros, it should have been more in the test.

FritzBox 6850 5G: High internet speed

The FritzBox 6850 5G offers support for 5G below 6 gigahertz. In the latest mobile communications standard, speeds of up to 1,300 megabits per second (Mbps) are possible, while the router can manage up to 1,000 Mbps via LTE (4G). For comparison: Current VDSL connections with 35b supervectoring achieve up to 250 Mbps, cable and fiber optic connections for private customers up to 1,000 Mbps. If 5G and LTE are not available, the FritzBox connects via UMTS (3G). The high speed of the Internet is clearly the great strength of the 6850 5G.

FritzBox 6850 5G: Only mediocre when it comes to WLAN

A look at the model name already reveals it: AVM’s 5G router is in many ways similar to the mid-range FritzBox 6850 LTE device. Both FritzBoxes achieve a theoretical WLAN speed of up to 866 Mbps at 5 gigahertz and up to 400 Mbps at 2.4 gigahertz. The 6850 5G does not support the new WLAN standard Wifi 6 (WLAN-ax). In the test, it performed slightly better than the older LTE model: It achieved up to 633 Mbps in the 5 gigahertz frequency (Wifi 5 / WLAN-ac) and up to 337 Mbps at 2.4 gigahertz (Wifi 4 / WLAN-n) and delivered significantly better results at greater distances. Compared to top models like the FritzBox 7590 AX (up to 922 Mbps) it looks pale. In addition, the high mobile speed via WLAN can by far not be fully exploited.

The FritzBox 6850 5G has fewer connections than AVM’s top models.

FritzBox 6850 5G: Connections and power consumption

AVM also relies on the well-known mid-range equipment of the 6850 LTE for the connections. The FritzBox 6850 5G has four LAN connections with gigabit speeds (1,000 Mbps) and a USB 3.0 port, which was only moderately fast in the test (37.8 megabytes per second via WLAN; 39.2 megabytes per second via LAN). There is also a connection for analog telephones and a DECT base for up to six cordless telephones and smart home devices. Great: The power consumption is extremely low at 3.6 watts.

FritzBox 6850 5G: As usual, good functions

AVM’s FritzBoxes regularly score points in the test with their multitude of useful functions. The 6850 5G is no exception: from call barring and child safety to hard disk access in the network, there is a lot on board that the FritzOS operating system does so well. Various DECT ULE devices can be controlled via the integrated smart home center; thanks to the mesh functions, the AVM network always connects devices with the access point with the strongest signal in the fastest WiFi frequency. The setup is easy thanks to numerous wizards.

FritzBox 6850 5G: price and release

The FritzBox 6850 5G is now available in stores. It costs 569 euros – much more than AVM’s top models. According to the manufacturer, the price is explained by the still relatively new and expensive 5G technology.
