OnePlus Nord 2 5G: mid-range smartphone with OLED and long battery life

Fast charging, long runtime and a bright OLED panel: OnePlus has adopted a lot from its flagship series for its new mid-range smartphone Nord 2. However, no Snapdragon from Qualcomm is used as the chipset, but MediaTek’s new top SoC Dimensity 1200.

The Dimensity 1200 is manufactured in 6 nm structure width and uses a 1-3-4 architecture with four energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores, three Cortex-A78 cores with up to 2.6 GHz and another A78 core for a maximum of 3 , 0 GHz.

The first benchmark tests that we did with the OnePlus Nord 2 attest the Dimensity 1200’s performance comparable to that of the Snapdragon 870, but it does not quite reach the values of the Snapdragon 888. In the c’t benchmark Coremark, the MediaTek chip lags slightly behind the Snapdragon 870 in single-core operation, but has advantages in multi-core operation. However, the MediaTek chip throttled more strongly than the Snapdragon 870 under constant loudness.

OnePlus delivers the Nord 2 in two memory configurations, with 8 GB of main memory and 128 GB of flash memory and with 12/256 GB. There is space for two nanoSIM cards in the SIM drawer, but not for a memory card.

The 6.4-inch OLED panel has a resolution of 2400 × 1080 pixels and has a maximum frame rate of 90 Hz. With 50 percent white on the screen, we measured a maximum brightness of 634 cd / m².

Like the one in the OnePlus 9 series, the battery has a capacity of 4500 mAh. The included 65-watt power adapter charges the smartphone in around half an hour. OnePlus uses the proprietary charging technology Warp Charge 65, PowerDelivery does not support the power supply. The smartphone lasted 17.4 hours in the streaming endurance run – an above-average value.

The rear camera takes photos in two focal lengths: OnePlus uses a 50 megapixel sensor (f / 1.88) for the optically stabilized main camera. The ultra wide angle (f / 2.25) with a picture angle of 120 ° has a resolution of 8 megapixels. Another 2 megapixel sensor collects further image information. A 32-megapixel front camera (f / 2.45) is available for selfies.

The Nord 2 comes with Android 11 and the Oxygen user interface. OnePlus changes the menu navigation of the stock Android here and there, but largely dispenses with bloatware. The manufacturer plans to provide the smartphone with upgrades to new Android versions for two years and monthly security patches for three years. OnePlus calls 399 euros for the 8/128 GB version and 499 euros for 12/256 GB. Sales start on July 28th.
