Mobian OS For PinePhone Now Available For Linux Tablet ‘PineTab’

A few months ago, we reported about Mobian Linux, an open-source project that aims to bring Debian GNU/Linux to mobile devices. Initially, Mobian was only available for Linux-based PinePhone. But as expected, Mobian OS has finally been ported to another PINE64 device, PineTab.

Yes, the Mobian team officially announced on Twitter that along with PinePhone it has started to support and build images for Linux-based tablet PineTab too.

The team also said that Mobian OS would support even more devices in the coming months. As of now, images of Mobian Linux are only available for PINE64’s smartphone and tablet device i.e., PinePhone and PineTab.

If you have a PineTab tablet, you can download the latest prebuilt Mobian image for PineTab and install it following the official guide.

However, if you’re a developer and want to build a custom Debian image for your device, you should check out the mobian-recipes repository. It contains debos recipes to generate Debian-based images for the supported devices.

Speaking of functionalities, the development team is yet to reveal what’s working with Mobian on PineTab. However, you can try on your own or expect features that work with Mobian on PinePhone.

Mobian operating system consists of a collection of Debian packages from the official archive Debian Bullseye and a small set of packages from the Mobian archive. It also features Phosh (Phone shell) user interface developed by Purism for its own Linux phone Librem 5.

Among the applications, Mobian has also tested a list of apps that you can install using the apt package management system. Most of the applications are available as Debian packages.
