13.5- and 15-inch models: AMD and Intel on board
The Surface Laptop 4 has a significant change compared to its predecessor when it comes to the processor: In the future, interested parties will have the choice between Intel processors or AMD chips for both sizes; with the Surface Laptop 3 this was only possible with the 15-inch model. According to the report, Microsoft is installing 11th generation Intel Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs and AMD’s Ryzen 5 4680U and Ryzen 7 4980U in the adapted “Surface Edition”.
Processor choice with restrictions
However, there is one limitation when choosing the processor: If you want to rely on AMD’s more powerful Ryzen 7 chip, you will inevitably have to opt for the 15-inch model of the Surface Laptop 4. In the smaller version of the notebook, only the Ryzen 5 processor is used. This leaves only the 13.5-inch version with Intel’s Core i7 CPU for users who want a handy notebook with enormous performance.
Surface Laptop 4: Storage up to 1 terabyte in size
The Intel chips are supported by a working memory of up to 32 gigabytes (GB), whereas the AMD processors get a maximum of 16 GB. The internal memory, an SSD in all equipment variants, amounts to a maximum of 1 terabyte (TB). However, this only applies to the 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 with a Core i7 processor. AMD supporters have to be content with a maximum of 512 GB.
Surface Laptop 4 price and availability
However, all of this has its price: The entry-level model with 13.5-inch screen, Core i5 processor from Intel, 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage costs 1,499 euros. With the Ryzen 5 processor from AMD, entry is much cheaper at 1,149 euros – but the customer only receives 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. The top model with a 15-inch display, Core i7 CPU, 32 GB RAM and 1 TB storage, on the other hand, is likely to cost 2,699 euros. It is not yet possible to say exactly when Microsoft will officially introduce the Surface Laptop 4. However, if WinFuture has its way, the new notebook from Redmond will be on the market in April.
