iPhone 12 Pro: Price, release, camera, size – all information here

D.he iPhone 12 Pro is the successor to the Phone 11 Pro, the first Apple smartphone with professional ambitions in its name. Compared to the iPhone 11, the added value was clear: slimmer design, better display, more cameras. And that at a price several hundred euros higher. The test in the laboratory also revealed clear advantages of the Pro version. Is the difference between iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro so clear this time too? COMPUTER BILD dares to make a prognosis based on the current rumors, which can also be found less focused in the overview article on the iPhone 12.

iPhone 12 Pro: Handy alternatives are coming

Rumors have intensified in recent months. It seems clear that Apple will bring a total of four iPhone models onto the market in the fall: two normal ones iPhone 12 models (one like the iPhone 11 with 6.1 inches, the other significantly smaller with 5.4 inches) and two iPhone-12 Pro-Variants. The iPhone Pro 2020 variants are significantly larger than in 2019: Whereas the predecessors iPhone X, XS and 11 Pro were 5.8 inches, the iPhone 12 Pro reaches one Display diagonal of 6.1 inches. The large model, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, would even have the largest iPhone display to date at 6.7 inches. So if you are looking for a modern iPhone with particularly handy dimensions in 2020, unlike in the previous year, you may no longer have to resort to the Pro model, but to the new, small iPhone 12 model. However, it should be noted: The display frames of the Pro models are much narrower, so that the size differences between the case widths will be less drastic than the display diagonal suggests. And: The 2020 edition of the iPhone SE in the classic design with 4.7-inch display and home button is even smaller. The notch is retained in all models.

Display: is OLED still a reason to buy?

In addition to the thick housing frame, there was a clear argument for the Pro models in 2019: Only here was a display with low-contrast OLED technology installed. The iPhone 11 had to make do with a comparatively pale LCD. That seems to be over in 2020: leakers Jon Prosser According to this time, the cheaper iPhone models also come along OLED technology ?? even if only in a simpler version from the Chinese company BOE. If you want full radiance, top brightness and sharpness, you have to continue to use the iPhone 12 Pro, because the OLEDs from Samsung should continue to come here. And that Samsung can build displays was recently shown by the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in the test with enormous brightness and strong colors. An important argument for power users: Only the iPhone 12 Pro series comes with an increased refresh rate of 120 Hertz. Hopefully Apple will get the increased consumption of electricity under control due to the higher frequency. For example, Apple has given the Apple Watch Series 5 an extremely dynamic frequency control, which only updates the time in standby with 1 Hertz.

Design: Only the Pro comes with a steel edge

For fans of clear shapes, the iPhone 12 Pro has a special argument in store: Loud Bloomberg Probably only the Pro models come with a correct one Stainless steel frame, which is as angular as it was on the iPhone 4S. An idea of the design is provided by a look at the iPad Pro, which has had straight edges since 2018, but they are made of aluminum. Leaker Sonny Dickson has created some dummies that show a possible design.

Quadruple camera in the iPhone 12 Pro

A wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens, all with 12 megapixels: the iPhone 12 Pro apparently stays with this combination for normal photos, while the cheaper iPhone 12 models have two lenses. According to the industry journal Digitimes, the Pro models 2020 have a fourth 3D lens in the form of a LiDAR scanners (Light Detection and Ranging), as you already know from the iPad Pro. This should enable better autofocus and 3D scans, for example for augmented reality (AR) applications. But the 2020 Pro models also bring some innovations for normal photography: The telephoto has become more powerful, and now comes with an optical triple zoom (previously only twice). Compared to the Android competition, however, the progress is not very impressive: The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes with five times optical zoom, the Huawei P40 Pro Plus even with two optical telephoto lenses (triple and ten times). However, Apple has always placed less emphasis on superlatives than on balanced image quality when it comes to cameras. Rumor has it that the iPhone 12 Pro will have a larger 12-megapixel sensor in the main camera (wide angle) so that it is even better in low light.

Processor, RAM, 5G and more

Regardless of whether it is Pro or not: All iPhone 12 models are powered by the new processor Apple A14 Bionic driven, so the speed would not be an argument for the pro. However, the main memory may be larger, according to an analysis by the investment bank UBS 6 gigabytes R.A.M. grow (iPhone 11 Pro: 4 GB). The new 5G cellular technology should be standard in the Pro models, but rumor has it that the fastest mmWave 5G technology can only be found in the iPhone 12 Pro Max. German users need not be interested in that, because mmWave 5G is not yet available in Germany, the frequencies are not even advertised for use. For the basic iPhone 12 models, 5G may only be available at an additional cost. Fast charging is supported with up to 20 watts. With a circle of magnets on the back, Apple also wants to eliminate an annoying problem with wireless (inductive) charging: If the induction coil in the back of the mobile phone is not perfectly on the counterpart in the charging cradle, charging only works with problems or often leads to too much harmful heating of the battery.

How expensive is the iPhone 12 Pro?

According to Jon Prosser the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro could hit the US market for $ 999 (128GB) (256GB: $ 1,099; 512GB: $ 1,299). Since prices in Germany are quoted with sales tax, the price in this country would possibly be between 1,149 and 1,549 euros. The iPhone 12 Pro Max would be $ 100 more expensive each. For comparison: For the cheapest iPhone 12 model (without 5G) Prosser gives 649 US dollars (around 730 euros). The Pro model would be around 400 euros more expensive than the inexpensive iPhone 12. As a new color for the iPhone 12 Pro, a dark blue variant is being traded in addition to the usual black, white and gold.
