Firefox: about: config commands – COMPUTER PICTURE

The normal Firefox settings are enough for most users; at best, power users want more. You can call up the normal configuration center via “Alt key> Extras> Settings”. This Config section offers more than it seems at first glance: If you look at the address bar, you will see that the internal URL is about: preferences. You can also access the settings by entering this address directly. Click on the headings on the left, switch to them and the URL will adapt. A mouse click on “General” appends a #general to the URL, “Home” is associated with #home, “Search” belongs to “#search”, “Data protection & security” is associated with #privacy and “Sync” is associated with # sync.

You could enter these addresses in the URL bar to get to the desired category without clicking. And then there is about: config. Here you can find equivalents for about: preferences settings and there are switches that are only there.

What is about: config?

about: config means “about (the) configuration” and is a configuration center for Firefox. Some settings there correspond to the GUI menu about: preferences (Graphical User I.nterface, graphical user interface): If you change a behavior in the first or second area, it also adapts to its configuration counterpart. About: config runs to its peak when you tweak (set) something there for which there is no GUI counterpart: Then you make Firefox much more powerful with functions that have not been used so far.

Mozilla has revised about: config in the past as part of Firefox updates. There is no guarantee that tweaks circulating on the web will work: switches for older Firefox versions may no longer have any effect on newer browser variants. In the following we introduce you to the hacks that work with the current Mozilla Firefox – we tested them with version 93. By the way, there was once the Firefox add-on gui: config. That made some functions easier to use. The extension is one of those with legacy technology. Since it is not available as a WebExtension, as required by Firefox Quantum (version 57+), it is no longer suitable in the modding scene today. The browser extension that worked well at the time is still a nice memory.

Deactivate JavaScript

The best Firefox about: config tweaks

The best about: config commands

about: config knows three data types: Boolean, Number and String. Boolean entries can be “true” or “false”; a function is thus switched on or off. Entries of the type Number contain a numerical value. Text is used as the entry value for strings. You can adapt existing entries in this regard. If an entry does not yet exist, create it and assign it the desired property.

Deactivate JavaScript

For some time it has been impossible to deactivate JavaScript in Firefox using the normal settings menu. If you want to prohibit the scripting language for all websites, you can only do this via about: config. Enter in the search field:

and double click on the entry to change the value from “true” to “false”. JavaScript is now deactivated; As a result, websites are restricted in their functionality – and you are safer on the web. Another double click switches the entry to “true” and JavaScript.

Change user agent

With the user agent, browsers send an identifier when a website is called up, which makes the clients identifiable. Some websites play the right content so dynamically. Changing the Firefox user agent promises more anonymity when surfing. Enter the following entry name in the about: config input field:

Insert by mouse wheel click

If you want to paste text that you have copied to the clipboard with Ctrl-C, this is usually done with a right-click or with Ctrl-V. It is also possible to press the middle mouse button (mouse wheel). To make Firefox sensitive to this variant, change the value of the following entry to “true” by double-clicking:

Now you will paste cached RAM text content into the address bar as well as into web page forms. In the case of the address bar, it makes sense to use URLs. Tip: If you would like to paste the clipboard content system-wide using the mouse wheel, you will find everything you need to know in the article “Windows 7/8/10: Inserting the clipboard using the mouse wheel – this is how it works”.

Do not send a referrer

The referer is a URL that the browser sends to the web server: the latter find out which website you previously opened. Webmasters evaluate how many of their visitors came to them from where. If you want to suppress this data transmission, look for the following entry and change the value after double-clicking from 2 to 0:

If you want to test whether the procedure was successful, enter before and after in a search engine and open each page. The second time “HTTP referer” should read “Referer is blank”. It is important that you access the test page via a link. On the other hand, if you enter the URL in the browser address bar, the service will not receive a referer URL even with the about: config value 2. Open not only via a search engine, but also in other ways: For example, play an online game and have a profile page there, edit it and add a link to the page. If you now follow the hyperlink, your browser game should be named in the page analysis (or, depending on the Firefox setting, not).

Tip: With the free full version AntiBrowserSpy 2021 it is even easier to deactivate the sending of referrers. In the Abelssoft program, switch to the “Anti-Espionage> Mozilla Firefox” area on the left. There you open the drop-down menu for “Referrer” and select “Never”. In the background, the software now modifies Firefox so that the above-mentioned about: config entry has the entry 0.

Change cache path

When websites are called up, Firefox stores them (“cache”) so that they can be called up more quickly the next time you visit them. Then the browser fetches data from the local hard drive / SSD – which promises a time advantage compared to fetching the data from a web server. Power users sometimes want to adjust the cache folder. Do you have about Datar on RAMDisk installed, part of the RAM is available as a fast virtual drive. To increase the speed while surfing, it is advisable to redirect the cache to the RAM disk. Search Firefox for

The entry does not yet exist: Create it by placing a point in front of “String” and clicking on the plus sign. Enter the path to a folder such as the root directory (drive) of your RAM disk. The drive letter can be seen in Windows Explorer. The entry to be made in Firefox is something like F: . Confirm by clicking on the tick symbol and restart the browser for the change to take effect. Firefox now creates the “cache2” directory at the specified location, in which there are the “doomed” and “entries” folders.
