Corona premium: Federal government and car manufacturers create incentives to buy

D.he lock-down measures imposed by the corona pandemic hit car dealers and manufacturers painfully. New vehicle sales have recently fallen sharply, which is clearly demonstrated by the number of new registrations in April. According to the Federal Motor Vehicle Office, only 120,840 new cars were registered in April 2020, a decrease of 61 percent compared to the previous year. No wonder, then, that speculation about a new scrapping premium has sprung up. But the stimulus package decided on June 3, 2020 let the industry, especially the big three VW, Mercedes and BMW, take a peek. In addition to the temporary reduction in VAT from 19 to 16 percent, there was nothing for vehicles with combustion engines. Environmentally conscious customers who are interested in a vehicle with an electric drive fare better; the federal government doubled the environmental bonus for e-cars from 3,000 to 6,000 euros.

Federal car subsidy only for e-cars

With the environmental bonus, the federal government is already promoting the switch to more climate-friendly and environmentally friendly electric vehicles. In the stimulus package that has now been adopted for 2020/2021, the federal government’s share will be doubled as part of an innovation bonus. The premium share of the manufacturer remains unaffected. In the example: up to a net list price of the e-vehicle of up to 40,000 euros, federal funding increases from 3,000 to 6,000 euros. This measure is limited until December 31, 2021. At a slightly lower level, plug-in hybrids also benefit from the new bonuses.

The reduction in VAT by the end of 2020 may make the purchase even cheaper. It was also decided to invest 2.5 billion euros in the expansion of modern and safe charging column infrastructure, the promotion of research and development in the field of electromobility and battery cell production.

Innovation bonus for e-cars in a sample calculation

The new car comparison platform Carwow has created a sample invoice for the possible savings. A VAT reduction is initially not taken into account in this invoice. Then the following sample offers result:
