BMW i Hydrogen Next: Hydrogen car will roll off the assembly line at the end of 2022

A hydrogen-powered X5: the BMW i Hydrogen Next.

F.r Union chancellor candidate Armin Laschet, e-cars are not the future, among other things due to the ecological effects of battery production and the extraction of raw materials. Bayerische Motoren Werke AG is currently working on a possible alternative: the BMW i Hydrogen Next produces the required electrical energy directly on board from hydrogen. The vehicle, which will be presented for the first time at the IAA 2019 (September 12-22 in Frankfurt am Main), is being developed by the carmaker based on the X5 SUV. What’s under the hood, BMW now has in one Press release betray.

BMW i Hydrogen Next: The technology

The hydrogen is stored in two 700-bar tanks that together hold six kilograms. They supply a fuel cell system that generates up to 125 kilowatts (kW) of power. The underlying mechanism is a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, the reaction product of which is water. BMW also installs a high-voltage battery that sits above the electric drive and provides additional dynamism when accelerating, among other things. According to BMW, the drive system output is up to 275 kW (374 hp). The car manufacturer does not provide any information on the maximum speed. Incidentally, the high-voltage battery does not have to be plugged into the braking energy socket and the fuel cell feeds it with juice.

BMW i Hydrogen Next: Appointment

Hydrogen-electric vehicles like the BMW i Hydrogen Next offer advantages. They are suitable, among other things, for people who frequently drive long distances; hydrogen refueling takes just a few minutes, similar to conventional fuels. BMW does not provide any information on the range, but it is loud Media report one charge should be enough for 400 to 500 kilometers. The car manufacturer also leaves details on equipment and price open. What is certain, however, is that the SUV will go into production in a small series at the end of 2022. Whether the mini-edition will help hydrogen technology make its breakthrough on the streets is questionable, especially since the regular version of the X5 is not a cheap vehicle, with prices of up to around 140,000 euros.
